Roanoke City Public Schools to get solar power systems – WFXRtv.com

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A few Roanoke City Public Schools are getting a new look and are taking a step toward using solar energy.

On Dec. 5, Secure Solar Futures (FSF) announced that it signed a 25-year Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Roanoke City Public Schools. This agreement allows the company, a provider of on-site clean energy to schools, hospitals, and businesses, to develop a 1.7-megawatt solar power system at seven schools.

FSF also provides the school district with on-site solar power at no cost over the next three decades while offering opportunities for workforce development in renewable energy.

“Going solar helps Roanoke City Public Schools protect their budgets against volatility in utility costs that is likely in the future,” said Anthony Smith, President and Co-founder of Secure Solar Futures.

Secure Solar Futures will install 3,667 solar panels manufactured by Trina Solar at Fallon Park and Fishburn Park elementary schools; James Breckinridge, John P. Fishwick, Lucy Addison, and Woodrow Wilson middle schools; and the William B. Robertson Central Administration building.

According to a release, in the first year, the solar system will produce 2,287,402 kilowatt hours of electric power. The company says this will offset about 39% of the electricity demand of the seven locations combined.

At the end of the PPA Term, the school district will take ownership of the solar power system at no additional cost. The system will produce energy for the remainder of the equipment’s 35-40-year lifespan.

“… We are very proud to have found a partner in Secure Solar Futures that values workforce development and will allow us to expose our students to the growing solar field so they can graduate with a diploma and skills in emerging technology,” said Dr. Verletta White, Superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools.

FSF has already partnered with other school districts in the Commonwealth including Prince William County Schools and Wise County Schools.

Construction is set to begin in the beginning of 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
